First Haircut

It is difficult to give haircut to children under two because they wriggle around. For children above two, they are often afraid of haircut. They may struggle and resists. My boy will cry very loudly. He hate the vibration of the electric hair shaver. Usually electric hair shavers are used for boys haircut.

To reduce the anxiety of having his haircut, you may pretend role play with him . Let him role play as hairstylist who cut your hair. Show him how fun it is to have his hair cut. He may begin to feel in control of situation that frightens him.

If your child is very young or quite frightened of haircuts, you may want to cut hair at home. Get help from your spouse or family member to hold him sitting on laps and cut the child hair. Please do not expect it to be a perfect cut since you are doing it by yourself.

When your child is three or four, you may want to take him to a professional stylist. For a first haircut, go to a salon recommended by friends. Before bring the child into the salon, you may want to talk to the hairstylist about your child’s anxiety.

Try bringing along your younger child when your older child is going for a haircut. This is to give the younger child the idea of what is going to happen in hair salon. Try the “distraction method”. Distract the child with toys or sweet.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not work. It all depends on individual child. My child does not fall into this trick no matter how i try this method.

Children who are older in age may have their own opinions about hairstylist. He may prefer a certain styles or shorter haircuts etc. Do not disagree and argue.

Let him have say in his own hairstyles, get him involved. Let him make suggestions so he know he is a part of    the famuly.
