With their heads raised high, 21 young women come onto the field. The Maldives’ Women’s National Football team is ready for kick-off. Their mothers and grandmothers never had a chance on the pitch. But a new initiative is helping to break gender stereotypes in Maldives, a small island nation in the Arabian Sea southwest of Sri Lanka. With support from the Government of Switzerland, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Football Association of Maldives launched a project in September 2010 to increase women’s participation in football and sports — and to encourage them to reach for their goals in life. The team’s challenges and milestones are highlighted in the documentary ‘Strides ‘, co-produced by UNDP, which shows how football can be a powerful tool for change. “The inspirational examples of each team member show that personal goals are important not only for the individual but also for building team spirit,” said Ferdinand von Habsburg-Lothringen, Advisor for Social Cohesion and Governance at UNDP Maldives.”This project aims to inspire young women to continue breaking the glass ceilingin all sphere of life.” “Our main challenge is to make women believe that football can also be a career opportunity,” said Mauroof Ahmed,Technical Director at the Football Association. “So we urge women to participate not only as players but also as coaches and referees, to name a few roles.” One team member, Aminath Nasheeda, says: “My greatest goals were to create a

Arrested Development playing People Everyday live at Herbert Von King Park in New York City on July 19 2007. Arrested Development speaks thru music to the world. Speech one of the vocalist for this collective says, Our people have been through so much turmoil and strife for hundreds of years now. We get on stage every night with the mission to broaden the perspectives and give inspiration to rise above the stereotypes and materialism.” Unsurprisingly, then, the Grammy award winning group Arrested Development has been devoted to nudging folks in the direction of freedom and spiritual evolution for over 15 years. The group describes their sound as “Life Music.” AD respects women, and promotes family, spirituality and “male responsibility.” They are about consciousness, the earth, African self determination and love. They define themselves as hip-hop artists but also just artists.” They are dancers, vocalists, turntablist, drummers, and everything in between. Arrested Development is and has always been a communal music community with any number of talented members on board, picture your family reunion but more musical. Speech may be the most known member of the group, being the front man, but Dionne Farris, Eshe (Black Life), Rasa Don (Raz), Baba Oje (the elder), Nicha and many others have contributed much to this Kalidescope of image and sound. ADs debut album 3 years, 5 months and 2 days in the life of…(EMI) referred to the amount of time passed between the start of the
