A Class Where Teens Learn Mothering, and Are Mothered
Posted on 19. Jul, 2010 by Eve.
This is the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Parents are a child’s first teachers. But some parents never learned from good examples. In New York City, a nonprofit agency called Covenant House tries to help homeless young mothers become good parents. The twelve or so teenagers who live at the shelter attend parenting classes four days a week. The class is called Mommy and Me. Teacher Delores Clemens is a mother of five and a grandmother. She teaches basic skills, like how to give a baby a bath and how to dress a baby depending on the season. She remembers one student who learned from her mother not to pick up a crying baby. The mother said that would only make the child needy and overly demanding. Delores Clemens told the student: “That’s not true. You have to hold your baby. He is crying for a reason. If you never pick him up, he’s going to keep crying. Pick your baby up. Cuddle your baby. Hug him!”Delores Clemens says her students also learn how to be good mothers by letting themselves be mothered. She said: “I’m doing something for them that never has been done for them before.” Around three hundred fifty teenage mothers graduate from Covenant House’s Mommy and Me class every year. Natasha is in class one day with her baby son. She lived on the streets. She is glad not only for the warmth and shelter of Covenant House. She is also glad for the help they offer in seeking a more secure life. She said: “They help you do your resume …

Arrested Development – Mr. Wendal
Posted on 14. Jul, 2010 by Eve.
Tony Bingham, a sincere friend, found our location for this video at the last minute – and we were of course elated. But on the shooting day in question, the skies produced rain clouds for miles. I sat silently, thinking how I’d finally gotten to shoot a music video for this band (I had already directed their EPK and documentary), and now the heavens were not cooperating. Clearly a disaster was abound. I decided to shoot anyway. Maybe two takes in, I’d pretty much given up on the clip having any signature look…everything was drab, muddy and dark. But within, it seemed, seconds, a wondrous thing happened. I received a call from my steadicam operator who said prior his schedule would not allow for him to be there – now he was asking for directions. My smile began. Once he arrived, the cloud cover peeled back. We had a stretch of about 3 hours of moist sunlight! Outstanding! After a bit of fertile photography, we packed up and left the farm location, stumbling accidently on a small shack in the middle of nowhere. Funny, when I entered the rickety structure, a visible hole stood out in the middle of the place. I thought out loud, “Quick, let’s place the camera down there, and spin it in a circle to catch each band member in a different part of this open house. Worked like a charm! And when I suggested Speech sit in the window, the sun grew brighter for our two only takes. God…is all one can say. We traveled back to downtown ATL, where I was favored with the distinct honor …

Girl’s Speech @ UN Conference on Environment and Development
Posted on 13. Jul, 2010 by Eve.
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development, also known as the Rio Summit, Earth Summit (or, in Portuguese, Eco ’92) was a major conference held in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 to June 14, 1992. 178 governments participated, with 118 sending their heads of state or government. Some 2400 representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) attended, with 17000 people at the parallel NGO Forum, who had so-called Consultative Status. The issues addressed included: *systematic scrutiny of patterns of production — particularly the production of toxic components, such as lead in gasoline, or poisonous waste; *alternative sources of energy to replace the use of fossil fuels which are linked to global climate change; *new reliance on public transportation systems in order to reduce vehicle emissions, congestion in cities and the health problems caused by polluted air and smog; *the growing scarcity of water. An important achievement was an agreement on the Climate Change Convention which in turn led to the Kyoto Protocol. Another was agreement to “not carry out any activities on the lands of indigenous peoples that would cause environmental degradation or that would be culturally inappropriate”. The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signature at the Earth Summit, and made a start towards redefinition of money supply measures that did not inherently encourage destruction of natural ecoregions and so-called uneconomic growth. Twelve cities were …
