What tips do you have for college preparation and for entrance exams like the ACT?
Posted on 29. Jun, 2011 by Young Parents Guide.
Leaders can help families and communities mobilize around the goal of getting ALL kids “college- and career-ready” through the use of a series of eight Iowa Future video clips from interviews with personnel at the Iowa College Student Aid Commission. Content includes what the new workplace realities are, why Iowa students have the fourth greatest debt load coming out of college, what supports there are to help students make good choices, and many other items of interest. The short videos can be used in a variety of settings—with a local school improvement advisory committee (SIAC), a parent-advisory committee, human service providers, high school faculty, etc. to make the argument that no student should be consigned to less than rigorous courses or low expectations, or a limited vision of what the future can hold. iowafuture.org

In Loving Memory of Anuththara Kavindi. She Took Her Life Inside The Musaeus College.
Posted on 19. May, 2011 by Young Parents Guide.
When 2009 dawned, 14-year-old Anuththara Kavindi Jayawardene drew up several New Year resolutions she hoped to fulfil during the year. I will donate Rs. 200 of my pocket money to the Sri Lanka Army; I will try to be friendly even with my enemies, and I will consume only five pizzas this year, she wrote in her notebook.Sadly, she would not live to fulfil her New Year wishes. Kavindi took her life on 22/7/2009, leaving her friends, family and country in a state of shock and grief. Kavindi, an only child, was a Grade 9 English medium student at leading Colombo girls school, Musaeus College. According to Kavindis mother, Sandya Kumari Jayawardene (45), just one week before the family tragedy mother and daughter went shopping for clothes, and Kavindi had wanted to buy two white frocks. I asked her why she wanted white, and whether she was thinking of going to a funeral, the mother told the Sunday Times. We never dreamt we would be attending a funeral from our own house, or that it would be Kavindis funeral. Kavindis suicide makes no sense to her parents. She loved and respected life, Mrs. Jayawardene said. We cannot understand why she would have done this. She showed no signs of stress, fear or depression. Her parents described their dead daughter as a loving child, a hard-working student, and a devout Buddhist. Kavindi excelled in information technology, her mother said. She loved to be with her computer. She would offer flowers to the Lord Buddha at the beginning of the day …

Comparing American and Chinese Parents
Posted on 10. May, 2011 by Young Parents Guide.
I’m Mario Ritter with the VOA Special English Education Report, from voaspecialenglish.com | http Some American parents might think their children need better educations to compete with China and other countries. But how much do the parents themselves need to change? A new book called “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” by Amy Chua has caused a debate about cultural differences in parenting. Ms. Chua is a professor at the Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut, and the mother of two daughters. She was raised in the American Midwest by immigrant Chinese parents. In the Chinese culture, the tiger represents strength and power. In her book, Ms. Chua writes about how she demanded excellence from her daughters. For example, she threatened to burn her daughter’s stuffed animals unless she played a piece of music perfectly. She would insult her daughters if they failed to meet her expectations. Ms. Chua says she had a clear list of what her daughters, Sophia and Louisa, were not permitted to do. They could not attend a sleepover, have a play date, watch TV or play computer games, be in a school play or get any grade less than an A.Many people have criticized Amy Chua. Some say her parenting methods were abusive. She even admits that her husband, who is not Chinese, sometimes objected to her parenting style. But she says that was the way her parents raised her and her three sisters. Ms. Chua makes fun of her own extreme style of parenting. She says she eased some of the pressure …
